We are huge cheese lovers! We love it on our breakfast sandwiches, in pasta, or even just to enjoy alone with some fruit. But we understand that not everyone can indulge due to lactose intolerance. This post will tell you how you can still be an urban cheesemaker and enjoy decadent, creamy cheese with every meal.

Option 1: Using Goats milk

Given that around 75% of the world’s population is lactose intolerant, you may wonder whether goat’s milk contains lactose and if it may be used as a dairy alternative. The fact is goat's milk does contain lactose, but it has a much smaller quality than cow’s milk. People with mild lactose intolerance seem to be able to tolerate goat’s milk. Scientists have found it is easier to digest due to the lower lattice and the smaller fat molecules in the milk. This means that goat’s milk is easily digested by those with a compromised digestive system — as is the case for people with lactose intolerance.

This leads us to its use in cheesemaking! Of course, we have a Feta & Goat cheese kit, where you can use goat's milk to make Greek style feta cheese or chevre (Goat cheese logs). But did you know you can use any animal milk with any of our kits?! That's right you can make your very own Goat Mozzarella and not worry about digestive issues! This is the same for the poutine, and cheddar kit as well.

Option 2: Vegan Cheesemaking

In the Western world, the quest to make non-dairy cheese reportedly began in 1896! We have done our best to create a cheesemaking kit that allows vegans and those who are highly lactose intolerant to enjoy cheesemaking without worry. Alexis and Jeremy, Owners of Cheese Maker, tried many different recipes before settling on this vegan cheesemaking kit. The best part? It grates, and melts amazingly! You can even experiment with different flavours. Add seeds instead of nuts and throw in some fresh dill for a delish addition to your fridge.

Try out either of these methods to enjoy the art of urban cheese-making, no matter what your dietary requirements are! If you have any questions please reach out to us, we are happy to help!
