Happy April Fools Day! Hopefully, you got to participate in some funny jokes and pranks today with friends and family. As we were thinking about today we wanted to share some laws that have been made around the world that revolve around cheese and dairy. These laws were REAL, not just jokes and had to be followed.

You must serve cheese with every meal

In Wisconsin from 1935 to 1937 there was a law passed that required restaurants to serve cheese with every meal.

It is illegal to take a bite of someone else’s cheese

In Oklahoma in the 1960s, it was actually illegal to take a bite of someone else's food, even as a joke. This includes any cheese you may be served. This was because taking a bite of someone else’s meal could be viewed as stealing. The first person in trouble with the city over this law took a bite out from some of the swiss cheese being served with grapes during a couple's park picnic.

You are not allowed to lie down while you make cheese

In South Dakota you are prohibited by law to lie down and fall asleep. Whether or not sleeping standing upright can be used as a loophole remains to be seen. This law seems normal for its purpose but it is interesting to think: how on earth did this come about?

You cannot buy Margarine

1925-1967 margarine was banned from sale in the state of Wisconsin. Even today, there's a law regarding margarine that was put on Wisconsin's books way back in 1895.

You cannot walk down the street with an ice cream cone in your back pocket

This law is found in Alabama, Kentucky and Georgia and dates back to the time when horseback was the most popular way of transport. Horse thieves would put ice cream in their pockets to lure horses away without being charged with stealing.

You cannot buy from an Ice cream truck

In Iowa from 1967-1970 ice cream trucks were banned from roaming its streets. This was to try to prevent children from getting hit by cars as they run to get ice cream. Although interestingly enough, there is no recorded incident of this happening.
